Bugs in the Classroom is an engaging and interactive STEM-based project that brings the fascinating world of insects directly into the classroom. This project aims to ignite students' curiosity about the natural world, promote hands-on learning, and foster a deeper understanding of biology, ecology, and environmental science. Wildlife Encounters will supply all supplies needed to care for the hissing cockroaches. Please fill out the form at bottom of page. We will contact schools to set up a time to bring the hissing roaches into the classroom. Due to limited supply we may not be able to supply every school who submits a request. This is available for school located in Sarpy County and Douglas County. There is no charge for this program. We will contact schools who have been selected to participate.

Project Objectives:

  1. Insect Diversity and Classification: Students will learn about the incredible diversity of insects and their classification, exploring various orders, families, and species. They will understand the importance of insects in ecosystems and human society.

  2. Life Cycles and Metamorphosis: Through observation and documentation, students will witness the captivating metamorphosis of insects, from egg to adult. They will understand the different stages of insect life cycles and their significance.

  3. Habitats and Adaptations: Students will explore the habitats of different insects and discover how these creatures have adapted to their environments. This will shed light on the concepts of adaptation, niche, and ecological balance.

  4. Ecosystem Interactions: The project will highlight the interconnectedness of insects with other organisms within ecosystems. Students will learn about pollination, predation, and symbiotic relationships.

  5. Scientific Observation and Data Collection: Students will practice scientific observation skills by closely studying insects' behaviors, movement patterns, feeding habits, and interactions. They will record their observations in journals and digital platforms.

  6. Ethical Considerations: Discussions about ethical treatment of insects, their role in ecosystems, and the importance of conservation will be integrated into the project, fostering responsible attitudes toward the environment.

Please be patient as we accept applications. We will reach out to accepted schools with further instructions. This is a brand new project we are working on so we are compiling all the equipment and content and will reach out when finished.
